அழியும் பேருயிர் : யானைகள்

” என்ற நூலை வாசித்து முடிக்கும் போது, எத்தனையோ ஆயிரம் ஆயிரம் ஆண்டுகள் பரிணாம வளர்ச்சி பெற்று உலகின் மிகப் பெரிய தரை வாழ் விலங்காக விளங்கும் யானைகள் எப்படி அழிவை சந்திக்கின்றன என்னும் பேருண்மை நம் முகத்தில் அறைகிறது. நம் பண்பாட்டிலும் கலாச்சாரத்திலும் யானைகள் பிரிக்க முடியாதவை. ஆனால் அவற்றின் இன்றைய நிலைமை மிகவும் மோசமாக உள்ளது. கடந்த ஒரு நூற்றாண்டில் மட்டும் இந்தயாவில் லட்சக்கணக்கான யானைகள் கொல்லப்பட்டுள்ளன. ஆப்ரிக்க யானைகளும் லட்சகணக்கில் தந்தங்களுக்காக வேட்டையாடப்பட்டுள்ளன. இன்று யானைகள் அழிந்து வருவதற்கு நம் மக்களின் மூட நம்பிக்கையும், இயற்கையைப் பற்றிய புரிதல் இல்லாததுமே எனச் சாடுகிறார் ஆசிரியர். இன்றைய சூழ்நிலையில் கூட, ஊடகங்கள் வெளியிடும் செய்திகள் யானைகளை ஒரு கொடூர விலங்காக சித்தரிப்பதை கடுமையாக எதிர்க்கிறார்.

“மனிதர் அன்போடு வளர்ப்பதாகக் கூறப்படும் யானைகள் வண்டி இழுத்தன, கடும் வெயிலில் ஏர் உழுதன, மூட்டை சுமந்தன, கல்லையும், கட்டைகளையும் இழுக்கின்றன. வழிபாட்டுத்தலங்களில் வெந்ததைத் தின்று விதி வந்து சாகும்வரை வதைபட்டு பெருமை காட்டுகின்றன. சர்க்கஸ் செய்கின்றன, தன் சகோதரனுடன் சண்டையிட வைக்கப்பட்டன. மன்னர்கள் என்ற மமதை கொண்ட குண்டர்களைத் தூக்கிச் சுமந்தன, பிச்சை எடுக்கின்றன, அடிமையாக சந்தைகளில் விற்பனைக்குள்ளாகின்றன, கெட்டவார்த்தைகளால் திட்டு வாங்குகின்றன, அடி உதைகளால் ரத்தம் சிந்தி அழுகின்றன.

வேண்டிய நீரும், உணவும், நிழலும் கிடைக்காமல் துடிக்கின்றன, அழுக்கடைந்த, கூச்சல் மிகுந்த வீதிகளில் அலைக்கழிக்கப்படுகின்றன, தனிமையில் தவிக்கின்றன, மொட்டை வெயில், புகைதூசிகளால் மன உளைச்சலடைகின்றன, இயற்கையான சத்துள்ள ஆகாரமின்றி நோயால் கஷ்டப்படுகின்றன, தன் வாழ்விடத்தை தானே அழிக்கவும், தன் இனத்தை தானே பிடிக்கவும் உள்ளாக்கப்படுகின்றன. “இருந்தாலும் ஆயிரம் பொன், இறந்தாலும் ஆயிரம் பொன்’’ என கொல்லப்பட்டு தனது தந்தத்திலேயே செய்த தன் உருவத்தைச் சுமக்கும் கொடுமைக்கு ஆளாகின்றன. ஆனால் இவ்வளவையும் பரிதாபத்திற்குரிய யானைகள் மகிழ்ச்சியோடு செய்வதாகவே நினைக்கிறது `ஆறறிவு கொண்ட’ மாந்தரினம்” என்ற இவருடைய எழுத்துக்கள், யானைகள் மீது ஆசிரியர் கொண்டிருக்கும் ஈடுபாட்டையும், நம் சமூகத்தின் மீதான கோபத்தையும் பிரதிபலிக்கிறது.

யானைகள் அக ஒலி மூலம் பேசிக் கொள்கின்றன என்ற செய்திகள் என்னை மிகவும் ஆச்சர்யப்படுத்தியது. ஐந்து கி.மீ தொலைவிலுள்ள யானைகள் அக ஒலி மூலம் தங்களுக்குள் தகவல்களை பரிமாறிக் கொள்கின்றன எனும் செய்தி வியப்பை அளிக்கிறது. இதில் மேலும் ஒரு ஆச்சர்யம் அந்த ஒலி மனிதர்களால் உணர முடியாத அளவுக்கு மிக நுட்பமாக இருப்பதுதான்.

தற்செயலாக நான் படித்த, “மிஸ்டரி ஆப் ஹிஸ்டரி’ என்ற நூலில் கண்டிருந்த விஷயம் இது தான்…
